Shillong, May 31: In what could be termed as a setback to the largest regional political party in the state, general secretary of the United Democratic Party (UDP) and former legislator from Nongthymmai constituency, Jemino Mawthoh, has quit the party citing “personal” and “unavoidable circumstances”.

Mawthoh submitted his resignation letter to the UDP supremo Metbah Lyngdoh on May 20, stating “…due to unavoidable circumstances, I hereby tender my resignation as member of the party and also relinquish my present post as general secretary with immediate effect.”

He noted that he has worked for the party for over 10 years, serving as a legislator, working president from 2014 and as general secretary from 2016 till date. “I want to express my sincere thanks for the opportunities that the party has given me all these years to serve the people of my constituency and the state. I acknowledge the support of my fellow co-workers during my tenure in various capacities in the party,” he added.

Mawthoh also maintained, “This decision is purely personal and I strongly hold my ground on this matter.”

The former legislator also informed that he had also tendered his resignation as Honorary Adviser, Planning, Investment Promotion and Sustainable Development Department, Government of Meghalaya.

Earlier, when official word from the former legislator or his resignation letter was not available, UDP leader and KHADC opposition leader Titosstarwell Chyne had confirmed Mawthoh’s resignation while he mentioning that he had no idea as to what prompted Mawthoh to suddenly take this drastic decision. Chyne maintained that everything is well within the party.

Meanwhile, speculations are already doing the rounds that Mawthoh is likely join other political parties.
