Shillong, April 6: A massive fire erupted at Lumshyiap-Chandmari locality on Saturday evening, which led to the loss of property worth Rs 80–85 lakhs. The fire and emergency services were quick to arrive at the location and contain the fire.

The local authorities also took precautionary measures by cutting the power supply until the fire was contained. The locality head of Lumshyiap, Phira Khongphai, mentioned that the fire started around 2 p.m., and they suspect that small children were playing with fire and must have spread over to the other side to the PHE Store, where PHE pipes were stored.

A Sunn executive engineer, PHE, said that approximately 80–85 lakhs of losses have been incurred. Sunn added that they will hold a discussion with the locality head about handing over the property in order that they can properly fence the property.

Khongphai also mentioned that they will hold a meeting of the executive committee to discuss measures and advisories that can be taken to avoid such instances.
