Guwahati, March 29: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has informed that Meghalaya and Assam have received excess rainfall while Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura have remained dry in the northeast (NE) with deficient rainfall so far this month.

The IMD data shows that Meghalaya has received 125 mm rainfall this month, which is 153% above the normal while Assam has recorded over 75 mm rainfall, which is 43% above normal.

Talking to the media persons, Sanjay O’Neil Shaw, deputy director general of meteorology at Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati, said scattered rainfall to fairly widespread rainfall activity with thunderstorm and lightning are likely over the northeast while isolated heavy rainfall over Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh has been predicted.

The IMD has predicted a drop in rainfall from Wednesday as the cyclonic circulation over East Bangladesh and its neighbourhood at 0.9 km above mean sea level has become less marked.

Over 81 mm rainfall was recorded in Arunachal Pradesh, which is 40% below normal, 27 mm in Manipur (34% below normal), 28 mm in Mizoram (39% below normal) and 33 mm in Tripura (23% below normal). Nagaland is the only northeastern state that has recorded normal rainfall.
