SHILLONG, AUG 28: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong on Friday said the Rs 3 crore event planned to receive the President’s Police Colour Award is to mark a historic moment for Meghalaya Police.
Replying to a query raised by VPP MLA from Mawlai, Brightstarwell Marbaniang, who questioned the proposed spending for a one-day programme, Tynsong said Meghalaya is only the fourth state in the Northeast and 18th in the country to get the award since it was instituted in 1952.
“We are so proud and so fortunate that the President of India has chosen Meghalaya Police as one of the best police forces. In 50-plus years of history, this is the only time we are getting it. It is a matter of pride,” he said.
He said the award itself proves the force is among the best in the country and the House should congratulate the police.

On the expenditure, he said details were not available at the moment, but the function will be a grand one likely to be held in late September or October.
He said the government has received indication that either the President, Prime Minister or Home Minister will attend the ceremony.
“I request all of us to attend the grand function to be organised by the state government to ensure this historical moment is celebrated,” Tynsong said.
Marbaniang had said the police deserve recognition but the government should provide details of the Rs 3 crore proposed spending.
