Govt to issue notification on age limits for jobs soon

SHILLONG, FEB 26: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday said a formal notification will soon be issued in regards to the age limits for job recruitment in four government departments.

These include Home (Police), Excise Registration, Taxation and Stamps, Home Guards and Civil Defence and Forests & Environment departments.

Replying to a short duration discussion moved by opposition VPP MLA from Mawlai, Sangma said, “The Cabinet held on January 24, 2024 has approved a proposal setting different minimum and upper age limits for recruitment to government service in the…4 government departments. Formal notification will be issued soon.”

He said that as per Office Memorandum dated June 11, 1973 the upper age for entry into government service as raised from 25 years to 27 years with a further relaxation of 5 years over the upper age limit of 27 years for candidates belonging to Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Caste.

The CM said that time and again the proposal for enhancement of age has been received from various sources and therefore upon careful examination, the Government in Personnel & AR (A) department vide Office Memorandum dated February 3, 2022 has notified the enhancement of the upper age limit for entry into government service from 27 to 32 years with a further relaxation of 5 years over the upper age limit of 32 years for candidates belonging to Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Caste.

He said this very said Office Memorandum also specifically states that:- “The new upper age limits will be applicable in case of all categories of posts except for certain categories of posts as may be notified by the Personnel & AR (A) department for the Home (Police), Excise Registration Taxation & Stamps, Home Guards & Civil Defence, Prisons and Forests & Environment departments”.

“In pursuance to the above order, 4 departments of the government viz Home (Police), Excise Registration Taxation and Stamps, Home Guards and Civil Defence and Forests & Environment departments has requested the government to set different minimum and upper age limits for recruitment to government service. These minimum and maximum age limits have previously been followed also,” the CM said while adding that posts like that of Inspector of Excise, Forest Guard, Officers of the Meghalaya Police Service etc, requires candidates who need to pass certain physical tests given the physically demanding nature of these jobs.
