Shillong, July 2: The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in India is one of the most trending topics at present and receiving mixed reactions from political leaders and parties.
The UCC has always been a subject of huge debate and discussion for past several years (decades now).
What is the idea behind UCC?
The main idea behind a UCC is to have a common set of laws governing personal matters such as adoption, inheritance, marriage, divorce for all the citizens of the country, irrespective of their religious affiliation.
Since, India being a democratic and diverse country with multiple religions and religious laws, currently has different personal laws for different religious communities.
Uniform Civil Code: What does Indian Constitutional says about UCC?
Article 44, of the Indian constitution, state that the state shall endeavor to secure a Uniform Civil Code for its citizens. Although, the discussions and debate about implementing UCC is doing rounds for several years, but it still remains to be contentious and politically sensitive topic.
How will UCC affect in North Eastern states of India and How North East leaders reacted
Knowing the fact that 12 per cent of tribal population of India lives in the North Eastern states, the people here follow their own personal and cultural rights.
Meghalaya
Now Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma, being one of the allies of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) said that “UCC goes against the actual idea of India itself.”
He said that “as a political party we realize that that the entire northeast has unique cultures. We want these to remain and not be touched.”
Nagaland
BJP’s other ally in Nagaland, the governing Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), on Saturday said that “implementing UCC will have a negative impact on the freedom and rights of the minority communities and tribal people of India”.
Mizoram
The highest tribal population lives in Mizoram at over 94 per cent, had on February 2022 cemented its anti-UCC.
Meanwhile on Friday, Mizoram home minister Lalchamliana said that Uniform Civil Code, even if legislated by Parliament, would not be implemented in Mizoram unless the state legislature by a resolution so decides.
Assam
However, in Assam, BJP ally AGP is likely to discuss its stand on Tuesday.
Although, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said that Uniform Civil Code (UCC) with implementation of UCC in India the polygamy will come to an end. He made the statement while addressing the “Hindu Ekta Yatra” organized by Telangana BJP president and Lok Sabha MP Bandi Sanjay Kumar at Karimnagar.
Sikkim
In Sikkim, the Joint Action Council (JAC) had said that it will address the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state by involving all the political parties and community organisations.
The symposium, is scheduled for Sunday (July 2) in Gangtok, the main aim of this is get suggestions from various stakeholders, following which it will then be submitted to the Law Commission of India.
