SHILLONG, JUN 26: Residents of East Khasi Hills will no longer need to approach the district headquarters for birth and death registration issues, with the Deputy Commissioner authorising all Block Development Officers to act as Executive Magistrates for such cases.

In an order issued Friday, the Deputy Commissioner invoked powers under Section 13(3) of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, read with Rule 9(3) of the Meghalaya Registration of Births and Deaths Rules, 1999.

The order states that BDOs across the district will now handle registration, correction, cancellation, delayed registration, and other related matters for applicants within their respective jurisdictions.

“Applications are to be submitted to the respective Block Development Offices for timely disposal of the same,” the order said.

The directive, which takes immediate effect and will remain in force until further orders, is aimed at ensuring faster disposal of cases at the block level.

Officials said the move will ease access for applicants in rural areas who earlier had to travel to Shillong for certificates, corrections, or delayed registrations.
