Shillong, Sept 22: AITC leader Dr. Mukul Sangma has been served with a legal notice of Rs. 20 crore for making defamatory statements against Henry Lalremsanga, the Chairman of 2B’s Group of Companies, in the ongoing Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

The legal notice has been served by legal counsel representing Henry Lalremsanga.

This comes two days after former CM Dr. Mukul Sangma accused incumbent Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma of having ties with Lalremsanga, who had been arrested in New Delhi in 2013 along with two other people for possessing drugs, which later turned out to be medical supplies and had a valid license for such supplies.

The notice is in response to the comment made by Sangma on September 19 – 20, 2023 where he labelled Lalremsanga as a ‘Drug Kingpin’ during the ongoing State Assembly session.

Mukul had alleged that Lalremsanga is a drug kingpin who supplies drugs in Mizoram and other states of North-East India and Myanmar. He had warned Conrad Sangma to disassociate himself from such a person.

The notice demands an apology and warns of potential legal action if Sangma fails to comply within a specified timeframe.

It said the remarks made by Dr Mukul Sangma have not only damaged his personal and professional reputation, but also indirectly tarnished the image of the Mizo community.

“Mr. Lalremsanga was wrongfully arrested in 2013 in relation to a seizure of medical supplies, despite holding a valid license for such supplies. He was discharged by the Special Court, ND & PS Act, Patiala House Court, New Delhi in 2018, citing a lack of evidence of any offence committed,” the legal notice read.

The legal notice has also demanded an unconditional apology from Mukul Sangma for his false and malicious statements within 7 days of the receipt of this notice.

Also, he demanded an immediate halt to making or publishing any more false and defamatory remarks against Lalremsanga.

The notice further asked Dr Mukul Sangma to make a payment of Rs.20,00,00,000 (Rupees Twenty crore only) within 7 days of the receipt of this notice as compensation for injury to Lalremsanga’s reputation.

Further, the notice noted: “It is highlighted that a person in public life is expected to exercise a degree of restraint while making public speeches, as underscored by the Hon’ble Supreme Court.”
