Conrad stresses on govt’s thrust in education sector, says challenges met with appropriate steps

Tura, Aug 19: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday inaugurated the newly constructed building and hostels of College of Teachers Education at Rongkhon, Tura in presence of North Tura MLA Thomas A Sangma.

Established in the year 1993, the College of Teachers Education is one of the premier institute in the State which offers B.Ed. degree course. The College of Teacher Education, Tura, Rongkhon gives opportunity and scope to the aspiring individuals who wish to be efficient and competent teachers in different categories of the stages of education especially the secondary stage to obtain B.Ed Degree creating a possibility of getting jobs both within and outside the State which in turn solves the problem of untrained teachers as well as unemployment of educated youths.

The new building and hostels for boys and girls built at an estimated cost of Rs. 18.04 cr has been funded by Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) Supporting Human Capital Development in Meghalaya, a project conceptualized by Government of Meghalaya.

The State of the art infrastructure will fulfil the urgent need for B.Ed. and M.Ed. programme which is as per the NCTE norms and standards.

Speaking at the inaugural function, the Chief Minister said that since 2018 the Government has prioritized education and has been making investment in education sector.

Lamenting that there was no clear direction or policies that ensured overall and holistic development of the education sector during the previous regime, he asserted that this government has identified the problems and has given due thrust for the overall progress of education sector.

He further said that when the government identified the problems in the sector, it initiated a systematic approach to resolve the problems for the overall good of the society. He, however, stated that there were challenges, and that government cannot resolve all concerns immediately but has taken steps to address the concerns.

He said that investment of Rs. 18 crore plus was a challenge for the government in 2018 where funding was a problem but government found out ways and means to ensure that the infrastructure was constructed.

He also spoke at length on shaping the mindset of the youth through programme that will build a breed of future generation that is capable and equipped to take challenges head on and work for the overall programme and development of the nation.
