TURA, Jan 23: The Congress will announce its list of candidates contesting the upcoming elections on January 24th, according to MPCC leaders information.

The party is expected to announce names for all 60 seats that are going to the polls. The delay in the announcement has been last minute hitches concerning candidate’s selection.

As per MPCC sources, several constituencies have more than one ticket aspirant which has led the leadership to take the views of the party workers at the grassroot level, particularly the block BCC.

Some of the candidates who are already confirmed to contest on the party symbol include former minister Sayedullah Nongrum from Mahendraganj in South West Garo Hills district, Kapin Ch Boro from Tikrikilla in West Garo Hills district, Dr Twill Marak from Resubelpara in North Garo Hills, former MLA Ropuel S Marak from Siju-Rongara constituency in South Garo Hills and former deputy chief minister Debora C Marak from Williamnagar in East Garo Hills.

It will be interesting to watch the candidature of Sayedullah Nongrum and K C Boro because Nongrum is taking on Mukul Sangma’s wife and sitting MLA Dikkanchi D Shira from Mahendraganj, while Boro is taking on Mukul Sangma himself from Tikrikilla.

Mukul Sangma is contesting twin constituencies of Songsak and Tikrikilla.

Sayedullah Nongrum was MLA several times, including two straight consecutive terms in 2003 and 2008, but lost the subsequent elections from Rajabala and even Tikrikilla.

K C Boro was MLA of Rajabala in the late 1990s but changed his constituency to Tikrikilla and lost. He was earlier also a senior leader of the BJP.
