SHILLONG, MAY 20: The Ministry of Education has invited applications for the post of Vice-Chancellor of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), with the online application window on the SAMARTH portal set to open on May 20, 2026.
A notification issued by the Department of Higher Education said the Vice-Chancellor, “being the academic as well as administrative head,” is expected to be “a person possessing the highest level of competence, integrity, morals and institutional commitment.”
As per the advertisement, the applicant should be “a distinguished academician, with a minimum of 10 years’ experience as Professor in a University or 10 years’ experience in reputed research and/or academic administrative organization with proof of having demonstrated academic leadership.”
The Ministry added that candidates should “preferably not more than 65 years of age as on the closing date of receipt of applications of this advertisement.” Salary and Terms
The post carries “a pay of Rs 2,10,000/- (Fixed) per month with Special Allowance of Rs. 11,250/- and other usual allowances.”
“The terms and conditions of the services will be those as set forth in the Act, Statutes and Ordinances of the University,” the notification stated.
The Ministry said the “appointment will be made from a panel of names recommended by a committee constituted under the provisions of Act of the University.”
Stakeholders of NEHU have been demanding the immediate removal of the Vice Chancellor Prof PS Shukla for the past one year. They have also reiterated their stand before the two-member team from the Ministry of Education during their visit last year, to review the functioning of the Central university.
