Guwahati, July 6: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday conducted searches at multiple locations in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland as part of a nationwide crackdown into the alleged misappropriation of funds in the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

The raids were carried out at 26 locations across 11 states and Union Territories in connection with four criminal cases involving alleged financial irregularities in BRO projects.

According to the CBI, the cases stem from allegations of irregular deployment of casual labourers and fraudulent payments made in the names of fake workers under Project Vijayak and Project Yojak in Ladakh.

The FIRs were registered following complaints by the Ministry of Defen
ce based on an internal inquiry conducted by the BRO’s Technical Board of Officers.

The agency said the investigation covers offences including misappropriation of government funds, cheating, forgery, criminal breach of trust, criminal conspiracy, bribery and criminal misconduct.

A total of 10 BRO officers, including officials of the ranks of Lieutenant Colonel, Major and Engineer, along with several private persons, have been named in the FIRs.

The CBI said searches led to the recovery of incriminating documents and digital evidence, adding that the investigation is continuing.
