Agartala, March 17: The Border Security Forces (BSF) shot dead an alleged Bangladeshi smuggler on Sunday following clashes that erupted between smugglers and border guarding forces at Maguruli village of Gournagar Block under the Kailashahar subdivision in Unakoti district, Tripura.

According to a BSF statement, about 15-20 miscreants approached the India Border with the intention to smuggle into India. However, when BSF troops challenged them to stop, they did not heed the warning, became aggressive, and encircled the BSF Jawan on duty. Sensing imminent danger to life and government property, the BSF Jawan fired one PAG round which hit one of the smugglers and was subsequently apprehended, added the BSF statement.

The Bangladeshi smuggler who was killed was identified as Saddam Hussein (age 23 years). The BSF statement also informed that another Bangladeshi was injured but was taken away to Bangladesh territory.

Following the incident, the alleged smugglers started attacking the BSF jawans and attempted to snatch the weapon to take him to Bangladesh territory. The BSF opened fire, compelling the Bangladeshi smugglers to flee towards Bangladesh territory.

The BSF jawan who was attacked sustained grievous injuries to his forehead and was evacuated to the nearby District hospital where he received preliminary treatment. The BSF jawan condition is now stable, further informed the statement.
