Guwahati, May 12: An incidents of prison break was reported from Silchar Central jail in Assam’s Cachar district on Thursday. According to reports, the convicts escaped from Silchar Central Jail (constructed during British period) by digging tunnel through the toilet.

The two identified as Hifur Rahman and Deep Nunia are residents of Karimganj and Cachar respectively.

Hifzur Rahman was one of the five accused in murder of college student Ahrar Ahmed (Naaz) in Karimganj in 2011.

All the five accused, including a lady, were sentenced to life imprisonment in 2013.

Hifzur along with another accused were initially sentenced to death by the Karimganj district court but they moved to Gauhati High Court and the apex court granted them life imprisonment.

Superintendent of police of Cachar district Numal Mahatta along with a team of senior police officials rushed to the jail and enquired the matter. A case has been registered and a search operation launched.

This has raised a serious concern regarding the security arrangements of one of the largest jails in Assam. In 2016, another convict escaped and he was arrested later.
