Guwahati, Apr 25: Two inmates were found dead in separate jail facilities in Assam’s Nagaon district on Saturday under mysterious circumstances, officials said.

The deceased have been identified as Jitumoni Konwar and Rup Singh Dera.

Konwar was found dead on his bed at the Nagaon Central Jail in the early hours, while Dera died in a separate incident at the Nagaon Special Jail. Dera, a resident of Lanka in Hojai district, was an accused in a murder case.

The exact cause of both deaths is yet to be ascertained.

The Nagaon District Commissioner has ordered a formal inquiry, appointing Additional Deputy Commissioner Gopal Sharma to lead the investigation.

“We have sent the bodies to Nagaon Medical College for postmortem. The exact cause of death will be known after the reports are received. Investigation is underway,” a police official said.
