Assam: SIR will lead to removal of 4–5 lakh ‘Miya’ voters from electoral rolls, says CM Sarma

Guwahati, Jan 27: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said that once the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is undertaken in the state, around four to five lakh “Miya” voters will be removed from the voter list.

Speaking to reporters after a programme in Digboi, Sarma said, “This time we have taken steps to ensure that Miya people could not vote, but this is only preliminary. When the SIR comes to Assam, four to five lakh Miya votes will be cut from the voter list.”

He added, “So let the Congress abuse me. My job is to trouble the Miya people. If the Miya people do not suffer, they will move further into places like Duliajan and Tinsukia.

A few days ago, I received a list of land transactions in Tinsukia where more land was sold by Hindus and bought by Miya Muslims. This shows that they have already reached Tinsukia, Digboi and Duliajan. If we are not careful now, then when will we be?”

The chief minister asserted that no Assamese people are being affected by the Special Revision (SR). “We have made all arrangements so that Miya people could not vote during the Assembly polls,” he said.

Ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, Sarma has sharpened his attack on Miya Muslims and the Congress. On Monday, he said voters must decide whether they want a government that “surrenders” before illegal immigrants or one that protects the state’s identity and culture.

Addressing the 77th Republic Day celebrations in Dibrugarh, Sarma said people also had to choose between a past marked by bomb blasts, protests and fear, and a present focused on peace and development.

He further said Assam’s development goes beyond infrastructure and is closely linked to the state’s identity. Sarma noted that the influx of people from East Bengal has significantly impacted Assam’s demographic structure.

Comparing the 2011 Census with the census scheduled for 2027, he said the share of people of East Bengal origin could rise to 40 per cent, adding that Hindus have already become a minority in 12 districts of the state.
