Tura, May 23: In a shocking turn of events, the Assam government has illegally ordered the eviction of a building on a disputed plot of land in Garobadha, West Garo Hills. The plot, belonging to a Garo resident identified as Indong Ch. Sangma of Garo Hills in Meghalaya, has become the center of a heated controversy as Assam authorities demolished the building constructed on it.

On May 21, 2023, a significant number of members from the A.chik Holistic Movement (AHAM) descended upon Chattibui Market, under the jurisdiction of the Garobadha Police Station, to protest against the unlawful activities. However, their efforts were met with resistance as a large contingent of police personnel, including the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Assam police, had been deployed to the scene by the Assam authorities.

AHAM members engaged with Circle Officers, police officials, and Mondols, requesting the production of relevant documents to support the eviction order. It was revealed that a petition had been filed in the High Court of Assam five years ago by Lt. Akash Ali of Dhapguri P.S., Mankachar, South Salmara, Assam, against Lt. Shan Kumar Hajong of Garobadha, West Garo Hills, Meghalaya, claiming ownership of 2 bigha, 4 katha, 11 lesse of land. However, the court order failed to mention the actual landowner, Indong Ch Sangma, and Lt. Shan Kumar Hajong’s son was unable to produce any supporting documents or evidence at the scene.

Mentionably, according to AHAM, Indong Ch. Sangma has a ‘land patta’ with the payment receipt till 2023 from the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) for the said land.

The incident has raised suspicions among AHAM members, with Wester G Sangma, General Secretary of AHAM, South Western Zone, suggesting that there may be ulterior motives at play between Akash Ali and Shan Kumar Hajong. They expressed disbelief and outrage at what appears to be a collusion to wrongfully seize land belonging to the Garo people.

The altercation between AHAM members, Assam officials, and the police lasted for an extended period, as AHAM protested against the forced eviction, arguing that the dispute should be settled with the involvement of the Deputy Commissioner, Magistrate, Superintendent of Police, Mondol, and Kanango of Garo Hills, Meghalaya, due to its inter-state nature. Unfortunately, no officials from Meghalaya responded to their requests.

AHAM reported the incident and their concerns to Nikman Ch Marak, the EM Land & Revenue in-charge, as well as Kanango GHADC (Garo Hills Autonomous District Council). However, they received no positive response from them.

This is not the first time such an incident has occurred. On January 13, 2022, a similar attempted eviction took place without proper documentation, but AHAM members thwarted the plan. Subsequently, after AHAM members had left the area, two bulldozers were used to evict at least 16 to 17 shops at approximately 5 PM.

As tensions continue to escalate, the fate of the disputed land hangs in the balance. The struggle between the Assam government and the Garo people remains unresolved, raising questions about the legality and fairness of the eviction attempts.
