Jowai, May 17: A new hanging footbridge constructed over the Umyurem River at Shangpung in West Jaiñtia Hills district is expected to significantly ease movement for farmers and residents by improving access to agricultural paddies in the area.

The bridge, built at a cost of ₹49,98,700 under the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) through the office of the Deputy Commissioner, West Jaiñtia Hills District, serves as a vital link connecting farmlands separated by the river.

For years, movement across the area was difficult, particularly during the monsoon season when water levels in the Umyurem River rise, affecting access to cultivation areas. The newly constructed hanging footbridge is expected to provide safer and more reliable connectivity for villagers engaged in farming and daily activities.

MLA Comingone Ymbon inaugurated the bridge on Saturday and noted that infrastructure projects in rural areas play a key role in improving livelihoods and accessibility for local communities.

Apart from the footbridge, Ymbon also announced developmental initiatives for Shangpung, including blacktopping of internal roads, procurement of garbage collection vehicles, and other amenities amounting to ₹15 crore.
