Dibrugarh, August 13: Tension prevailed along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border near Likabali on Thursday morning after stone-pelting incidents were reported from the area.
According to sources, Assam Police fired four rounds after alleged stone-pelting by miscreants from Arunachal Pradesh targeted protesters near the inter-state border. No injuries were reported, and the situation was said to be under control, with authorities closely monitoring developments.
Several organisations in Assam have imposed an economic blockade in parts of north Assam since Wednesday amid escalating tensions along the border.
The Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK), a Mising community organisation, had called a 12-hour shutdown in Dhemaji district on Wednesday in protest against the alleged firing on 11 Assam villagers at Mingmang Bodoti along the inter-state boundary on Monday.
The firing followed a dispute over land claimed by Assam and allegations of occupation by people from Arunachal Pradesh.
Amid the tension, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma appealed to people in both states to maintain peace and harmony.
“Assam and Arunachal Pradesh share a bond that goes far beyond boundaries. For generations, our people have lived as brothers and sisters, bound by love, affection and mutual respect,” Sarma said in a post on X.

He said most border differences had been resolved through dialogue and noted that 52 villages remain under discussion.
“I appeal to the people of Assam and Arunachal to maintain peace and harmony. Boundaries may define our States, but they can never divide our hearts,” Sarma said.
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu while appreciating Assam CM’s peace appeal, said he had discussed the situation arising from the recent incident at Hime village, near the Assam border, with AAPSU and representatives of the Galo Welfare Society, Galo Students Union and Dolok Bango Welfare Society.

“The priority is to facilitate dialogue, and restore normalcy at the earliest. All concerned stakeholders are being engaged to maintain peace, and uphold mutual trust,” Khandu said.
