Shillong, July 24: A man was arrested on Monday for impersonating as a Captain of the Indian Army’s Assam Regiment and is suspected of being a spy.

The suspect, identified as Sar Chehon Rongpi from Rongpi Village in Dokmoka, Karbi Anglong District, Assam, was detained in the HQ 101 Area, Shillong by the Indian Army officials on duty at its CSD canteen after finding his behaviour suspicious.

According to the FIR filed by one of the Army officials, Sepoy Om Prakash, Rongpi has been roaming around various military stations in an Indian Army uniform, falsely presenting himself as a military officer and taking pictures of the sensitive military instalments.

After failing to produce any official ID to back his claim of being an Army officer, he was detained and questioned by the Army. The Army officials discovered sensitive military photographs and videos on his mobile phone, including images of military convoys, weapons like AK-47 rifles, and various military establishments.

At the same time, the suspect kept changing the name of the Army unit he belonged to. Initially he said he was from 119 TA Assam, then said he was from 15 Assam Regiment; the Army officials of 101 Area called all the units he named, but all of them replied in negative. Later, as per the FIR, he claimed to be a porter in Arunachal, and then a cook.

He also confessed to the Army officials that he had entered the HQ 101 Area many times from different gates, and always introduced himself as an ARC (Assam Regimental Centre) captain, the FIR said.

After conclusion of their probe, the suspect was handed over to Meghalaya Police for further investigation.
