SHILLONG, OCT 27: In a relief to households undertaking small construction works, the Cabinet on Tuesday approved an amendment to the Meghalaya Minor Mineral Concession Rules, 2026.
The amendment will allow people to use minor minerals extracted incidentally while digging a well, constructing a house or carrying out works in the backyard or kitchen garden.
Briefing the media after the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Minister and MDA spokesperson Wailadmiki Shylla said many people face problems when boulders and other materials come out during such small works.
“While doing unintended construction in your backyard, digging a well or constructing a house, you tend to extract boulders or minerals. So unintended extraction arises,” Shylla said.
He said the government has now created a provision to allow use of such material.
“We are allowing unintended extraction which arises because of construction in the backyard or kitchen garden or other things in a small area to the maximum of half an acre,” Shylla added.
