SHILLONG, OCT 28: Meghalaya is set to get a major boost in professional football with the Cabinet on Tuesday clearing a proposal to lease nearly 20 acres of land at Mawkhanu, New Shillong, to NorthEast United FC.
The land, measuring 19.99 acres, has been leased for 45 years for setting up a football academy.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, who chaired the Cabinet meeting, shared the decision on X, stating that the academy will be developed with an investment of Rs 40 to 50 crore.
The facility will include three football grounds, accommodation for players and other infrastructure aimed at nurturing local talent and grooming youngsters for top-level competition.
Sangma said the move will complement the state’s Mission Football initiative.
“While we continue to strengthen grassroots football and support local clubs, this initiative will help bridge the gap between grassroots development and professional football,” he said.
