Shillong, August 13: In a move highlighting the Meghalaya government’s response to long-standing concerns among local communities, the state Cabinet has approved a draft “Resolution against the mining of uranium in the State of Meghalaya”, which will be placed before the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly during its upcoming Autumn Session beginning August 24.

The move comes after decades of public opposition to uranium mining in parts of Meghalaya, particularly in the South West Khasi Hills, where deposits have been identified in areas including Domiasiat, Wahkaji and Mawthabah.

Taking to X, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced the Cabinet decision, with the proposed resolution set to provide the state’s position on uranium mining a formal platform in the Assembly.

Meghalaya is estimated to hold around 16% of India’s uranium reserves, making the issue particularly significant for both resource development and the state’s environmental and community concerns.

Opposition to uranium mining has continued for decades. The proposed Assembly resolution now brings the issue into the state’s legislative process, with the government seeking to formally articulate Meghalaya’s position on uranium mining.

The move is also significant in the context of Meghalaya’s distinctive land and governance system, where community ownership and customary institutions play an important role in decisions concerning land and natural resources.
