Shillong, May 6: Dr. D.R.L. Nonglait has formally accepted the National People’s Party (NPP) ticket to contest the upcoming MP By-Election to be held in the upcoming months.
The by-election is set to be held following the demise of Shillong MP Dr. Ricky A.J. Syngkon on February 19, after he reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest while playing futsal in Shillong.
In a letter addressed to the party State President on Wednesday, Dr. Nonglait expressed gratitude to the party leadership and members for placing their faith and confidence in him by offering him the opportunity to contest the election on the party ticket.

“After careful consideration, I am pleased to formally accept the proposal,” he stated in the letter.
Dr. Nonglait further assured that he would abide by the principles, vision and collective decisions of the party while working diligently for the welfare and development of the people, the state and the country.
It maybe mentioned, Dr. D.R.L. Nonglait is a prominent academic and the President of the Khasi Authors’ Society (KAS), widely known for spearheading the campaign for official recognition of the Khasi language in Meghalaya and its inclusion in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India.
He has consistently advocated for the inclusion of Khasi in the Eighth Schedule and has also urged the government to introduce Khasi as a medium of instruction and examination up to the degree level.
Academically, Dr. Nonglait holds a Ph.D. in Khasi from North-Eastern Hill University along with several advanced qualifications in linguistics and Khasi studies.
