A statement issued by East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem on Monday informed that an FIR was registered at Rynjah Police Station on October 5, 2022, accusing Thapa of penetrative sexual assault under the POCSO Act.
The case was investigated, a charge sheet filed, and the accused remained in judicial custody for three years, five months and 26 days during trial.
On April 1, 2026, Special POCSO Judge R Rymbai delivered the verdict, convicting Thapa in connection with Special POCSO Case No. 68 of 2022. He was sentenced to serve the remaining 21 years, six months and four days — totaling 25 years in jail — and faces an additional three months if he defaults on the fine imposed for the offence.
