Assam quake impacts four districts, three injured

Guwahati, Jan 5: A moderate earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck central Assam in the early hours of Monday, impacting four districts and leaving three people injured, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

The tremor occurred at 4:17:40 am, with its epicentre near Morigaon district at a depth of 50 km, as recorded by the National Centre for Seismology.

Authorities said Morigaon, Nagaon, Sonitpur and Nalbari districts were affected, with tremors reported across seven revenue circles—Morigaon, Mikirbheta, Nagaon, Samaguri, Dhing, Banekuchi and Tezpur. In all, 13 villages were impacted, affecting 21 people, the ASDMA report noted.

All three injuries were reported from Morigaon district, including two cases in the Morigaon revenue circle and one in Mikirbheta. The injured were provided prompt medical assistance, officials said.

The earthquake caused partial damage to eight houses—six in Nagaon district (Samaguri and Dhing revenue circles) and two in Nalbari district (Banekuchi). An elementary school in Nagaon revenue circle also sustained partial structural damage.

In Sonitpur district, the main gate of Haleswar Dewalai under the Tezpur revenue circle was partially damaged.

State disaster management authorities said the situation remains under control, with no reports of major structural collapse or casualties beyond the confirmed injuries. District administrations continue to monitor the situation and carry out ground-level damage assessments.
