Guwahati, Dec 28 : The Election Commission of India’s (ECI) special house-to-house verification drive has led to the deletion of 10.56 lakh names from Assam’s draft electoral rolls, published on Saturday (December 27, 2025).
ECI has already completed a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, and the SIR is also underway in 12 other States and Union Territories. Unlike these States, however, Assam is not undergoing an SIR; instead, a ‘special revision’ of electoral rolls is being conducted.
According to official figures, of the names removed, nearly 4.79 lakh belonged to deceased voters, over 5.23 lakh were found to have shifted out of their registered constituencies, and 53,619 were identified as duplicate entries.
The door-to-door verification exercise was carried out across the state between November 22 and December 20 as part of the Special Revision (SR) of electoral rolls for 2026.
The Chief Electoral Officer’s (CEO) office said Assam currently has 2,52,02,775 electors on record. However, this figure includes more than 93,000 ‘D voters’—individuals whose citizenship status is under adjudication before Foreigners’ Tribunals and who are barred from voting until cleared by a court. Excluding these cases, the effective number of electors in the state stands at 2,51,09,754.
The CEO’s office added that every eligible elector was covered during the exercise, with officials conducting 61,03,103 household visits across Assam.
“The Election Commission of India has concluded the House-to-House verification phase of the Special Revision–2026 in Assam. The exercise was undertaken to ensure an inclusive, accurate and transparent electoral roll for the state,” the CEO said.
The commission has also outlined procedures for corrections and claims.
New voters can apply for inclusion by submitting Form 6, while objections to the inclusion of any name or requests for deletion can be filed using Form 7. Voters who have changed their place of residence must submit Form 8 to update their address in the electoral records.
