Guwahati, Dec 22: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said the state government is closely monitoring developments across the border, following a fresh wave of unrest in neighbouring Bangladesh.

Speaking to reporters, Sarma said every development in Bangladesh was being watched with utmost attention.

“We have all seen how the Hindu population is being tortured and burnt alive in Bangladesh. Their leaders repeatedly say that Northeast India needs to be cut off and controlled by Bangladesh,” Sarma stated.

The Chief Minister expressed serious concern over the situation in Bangladesh, alleging that members of the Hindu community are facing targeted violence.

He stressed that Assam has historically dealt with challenges linked to cross-border infiltration and said the current circumstances demand heightened vigilance.

Sarma underscored that maintaining internal security and safeguarding law and order remain top priorities, particularly given Assam’s geographical proximity to Bangladesh.

Reiterating his earlier stand, Sarma condemned repeated statements from certain Bangladeshi quarters advocating territorial claims over Northeast India, calling them reckless and unacceptable.

He asserted that India’s global standing — as a nuclear-armed nation and the world’s fourth-largest economy — means such provocations will not go unanswered.

The Chief Minister also said eviction drives against illegal encroachments will continue across Assam.

“We will carry that forward in phases. We aim to evict all lands that are illegally occupied,” he added.
