SHILLONG, OCT 11: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has urged the Public Works Department (PWD) to remove pandal constructions and other temporary structures erected along PWD roads, stating that they are obstructing movement and causing inconvenience to the public.

In a letter to the Chief Engineer, PWD, on Thursday, the Union said the complaint was submitted following numerous complaints from stakeholders and the public at large.

“This letter is being submitted following numerous complaints received from stakeholders and the public at large regarding the obstruction and inconvenience caused by such constructions on PWD roads. These structures have been causing difficulties for the smooth movement of vehicles and pedestrians, particularly in areas where road space is already limited,” the KSU said.

While stating that it understands such temporary structures may be erected for various events and purposes, the Union maintained that public safety cannot be compromised.

“It is important that they do not obstruct public roads or compromise the safety and convenience of the general public,” the KSU said.

The Union has requested the PWD to ensure proper guidelines are followed before permitting such structures on public roads.

“In view of the repeated complaints, we request your esteem office to kindly look into the matter and take necessary action for the removal of pandal constructions and other temporary structures that are obstructing PWD roads, and to ensure that proper guidelines are followed before permitting such structures on public roads,” it said.

“We hope that the concerned authority will take necessary action at the earliest in the larger interest of public safety, convenience and the proper utilisation of public roads,” the KSU added.
