Shillong, June 18: The night-time traffic restrictions at the Umshyrpi Bridge have been officially withdrawn, allowing vehicular movement from both directions during the night hours, informed East Khasi Hills SP (Traffic), K Prasad.
The restrictions, which were in place from 10 PM to 5 AM, had been imposed to facilitate the launching of girders for the new bridge over the Umshyrpi river at Rilbong. The lifting of the traffic curbs brings much-needed relief to commuters affected by the recent diversions.
The bridge work, which had led to significant traffic diversions over the past few days, is nearing completion. According to officials involved in the project, minor welding work will continue, but it will not require further restrictions on vehicular movement.
Earlier, vehicles travelling between Upper Shillong and MES Point via Umshyrpi Bridge, as well as those from Lumdiengjri/Old Cherra heading to Upper Shillong, were rerouted through alternative routes such as Pomlakrai, Laitkor, Madanrting, and Laitumkhrah. Emergency services were exempted from these diversions.
