Shillong, June 7: The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU), Jowai Circle has sought the intervention of the District School Education Officer (DSEO) into challenges faced by the Kiang Nangbah Government College (Higher Secondary) in Jowai.
In its memorandum, the JSU has pointed out severe infrastructure deficiencies due ro limited classrooms, outdated computer labs, lack of smart learning facilities, and an under-equipped library that restricts access to academic resources.
It also said that there is faculty shortages and workload strain. The morning section operates with only one teacher for 350 students, resulting in an overwhelming academic burden and reduced instructional quality. Additionally, language teachers are forced to handle Arts, Science, and Commerce streams due to faculty gaps.
Another problem is that the school accommodates around 520 students in the day section (Arts: 350, Science: 120, Commerce: 50), yet lacks sufficient classroom space—forcing four small rooms for Science and two small rooms for Commerce, worsening learning conditions.
Regarding the issue of unclear land ownership status, the JSU said the unresolved jurisdiction between B.Ed and Higher Secondary authorities, causing administrative confusion and hindering development efforts.
It also alleged that assistant lecturers’ salaries remain irregular due to incorrect classification under BEAM, preventing proper pay increments and job security.
The DSEO has assured to take up these concerns to the relevant authorities for urgent intervention, prioritizing faculty recruitment, budget corrections, infrastructure enhancement, and addressing the land ownership issue.
“The union welcomes the assurance but calls for immediate action, emphasizing that the quality of education is suffering due to faculty shortages and overcrowding. Students are struggling with limited instructional time, and without urgent intervention, learning standards will continue to decline. JSU will actively monitor developments and press for meaningful reforms to improve school conditions,” the JSU said.
