Imphal, June 3: Torrential rains lashing Manipur for the past four days have triggered severe flooding across the state, affecting more than 19,000 people and damaging at least 3,365 houses, officials said on Monday.

The floods, caused by overflowing rivers and multiple embankment breaches, have inundated large parts of Imphal East district, with Heingang, Wangkhei, and Khurai constituencies among the worst hit. Senapati district in the hill region has also reported widespread damage.

Authorities have set up 31 relief camps, mostly in Imphal East, to shelter those displaced by rising floodwaters. Officials confirmed that 47 landslides were reported across different districts during the same period.

Several areas in the state capital, Imphal, have been left waterlogged. The Imphal River breached embankments in Khurai, Heingang, and Checkon, flooding residential and commercial zones. Critical infrastructure, including the All India Radio Imphal complex and the state-run Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), have also been affected.

“Waterlogging has severely disrupted normal life and key services. Emergency measures are being undertaken to address the situation,” an official said.

Relief and rescue operations are ongoing, with authorities closely monitoring river levels amid predictions of continued rainfall.
