Tinsukia, May 4: Five police and commando personnel have been suspended, and the Officer-in-Charge of Bordumsa Police Station in Tinsukia district has been transferred and closed on reserve lines on charges of allegations of custodial torture.

The action follows massive public protests after a youth from Mohong village, identified as Sanjeev Moran, was allegedly brutally assaulted in police custody on May 3. According to reports, Moran was summoned to the police station by OC Biswajit Saharia and other officers, including one identified as Deka. He was reportedly subjected to severe physical assault, including the use of hot chilli paste — a practice widely condemned as a form of torture.

The incident triggered a wave of outrage, with residents of Mohong village taking to the streets in protest, demanding accountability and justice. The public pressure led the district police to initiate swift disciplinary measures.

The suspended personnel include: Sub-Inspector Rajib Deka, Sub-Inspector Jayanta Kalita, Constable Bishal Boro, Constable Rajib Deka, Constable Bhaiti Deka, and Officer-in-Charge SI Biswajit Saharia has been transferred and closed to reserve lines pending further investigation.

Tinsukia Superintendent of Police, Dinesh Pratap Singh Rathore, has directed the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Margherita to conduct a thorough inquiry into the incident. The SDPO has been tasked with submitting a report within 48 hours to facilitate further action.
