Shillong, Aug 5: The Rationalisation Committee has worked out pay enhancements and rationalisation of pay for different Samagra Shiksha (Non-Academic) staff in the state even as the All Meghalaya SSA Non-Teaching Staffs Association (AMSSANTSA) has demanded written assurance before calling off its ongoing indefinite sit-in-demonstration.
After chairing a meeting with a delegation of the AMSSANTSA on Monday, Commissioner & Secretary of Education department, Vijay Kumar Mantri, who is heading the Rationalisation Committee, said, “We have worked out pay enhancements and rationalisation of pay of different positions. The minutes will be issued tomorrow.”
“The committee members have given their comments on the proposed enhancements which are noted for consideration. They (AMSSANTSA) informed that they will decide on withdrawal of agitation based on the government’s final decision which may be tomorrow or day after latest,” he said.
The meeting was called after the AMSSANTSA has decided to continue with their ongoing indefinite sit-in-demonstration demanding for 80% salary enhancement.
Asked, Mantri said, “We are working towards rationalising the salaries. We are working on the principle of reducing the gap of pay between high and low and more salary for more years of service. Exact numbers can be released after approval of the government.”
Speaking to reporters, president of the AMSSANTSA Jennyfer Synrem said that there has been improvement in the discussion during the meeting held on Monday.
“However, we want a written communication and for that reason we are not calling off the agitation as such. We will continue our agitation in a peaceful manner. Let us get the written assurance from the government, which they promised us within this week, after which we will call off our agitation,” she said.
Asked, the president of the association admitted that their demand for 80% salary enhancement is not justified. “If we go by 80%, some of us will be getting Rs 80,000 and some will be getting only Rs 8000, which is not justified at all,” she said while adding “We are fighting for the betterment of everyone so we are taking into consideration each and every member of our association.”
She said that the association however is not accepting the government’s decision to enhance the salaries of the non-teaching staff by 25%.
Stating that there is need to rationalise the system, Synrem said, “We thank the government of Meghalaya for setting up this rationalisation committee. I don’t think other organization would have get the chance to represent the staff member to sit along with the higher up and make the salary and form a committee so this is a history that we have made and that we are happy with the committee.”
