Shillong, July 15: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Monday sought clarification from the Ganesh Das hospital following alleged charging of exorbitant rates for availing treatment at the new Natal Intensive Care Unit.

Speaking to reporters, HYC president Roykupar Synrem said the delegation of the HYC met the Medical Superintendent of the hospital after receiving complaints from several quarters about the exorbitant rates charged for availing treatment at the natal intensive care unit.

The internal management committee of the hospital had fixed Rs 1500 per day for such treatment.

“Therefore, we had sought clarification on the committee’s decision to come up with this notification. To this, the medical superintendent clarified that the rate was fixed for the smooth functioning of the 40 bedded natal intensive care unit,” he said.

“When asked if patients can claim reimbursement from MHIS, the medical superintendent stated that patients covered under MHIS will not have to pay anything for such treatment,” Synrem said while adding “In view that many people don’t have MHIS card and those who have MHIS cards don’t link it with Aadhaar, the MS clarified that if such people are admitted in the hospital, they can register at the MHIS cell, which will also help in linking the MHIS with Aadhaar and treatment will be free of cost.”

“Also, for those who do not have a MHIS card, the hospital can help them if they provide a BPL card or ration card to show that they come from a low income group and to ensure treatment is free of cost. Those who do not have BPL cards, they can bring a certificate issued by the headman to show they belonged to a low income group,” he added.
