68% voters turnout despite sporadic cases of violence in Manipur

Imphal, April 19: Despite incidents of violence, Manipur witnessed 68 percent voter turnout as 15.44 lakh voters cast their ballots for Lok Sabha seats.

Sporadic violence, polling booth vandalism and clashes between rival groups marred the electoral process in districts like Bishnupur, Imphal East, and Imphal West, and injured six persons.

Polling, started at 7 a.m and witnessed participation until 4 p.m. Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, accompanied by his wife, exercised their franchise early in the morning at Srivan Higher Secondary School Polling Station, and urged for peace and participation in the democratic process.

Voting will be held in the remaining 13 Assembly segments of Outer Manipur (ST) seat in the second phase on April 26.

Over 15.44 lakh voters, including 8.02 lakh females, were eligible to decide the electoral fate of 10 candidates in the two Lok Sabha seats six in Inner Manipur and four in Outer Manipur (ST).
