TURA, Oct 11: One of the main state roads and probably the oldest in the East Garo Hills region linking the plains of North Garo Hills through Songsak and Dagal- Nanggapa has been shut down for heavy vehicular traffic from Wednesday due to damages to it from incessant rains that lashed the region, last week.

The Resubelpara division of the PWD issued a notice on Wednesday announcing a halt to movement of heavy vehicles, particularly trucks and buses, through the 23 kms road until further orders.

The notice states that heavy vehicles coming from Dudhnoi side to Songsak will now need to proceed through NH-217 via Dainadubi, Rongjeng and to Songsak.

Vehicles coming from Berubari (Bajengdoba) side and heading to Songsak will have to proceed via NH-127B through Jengjal, Rongrenggiri (Williamnagar) road.

Heavy vehicles plying from Mendipathar, Resubelpara will have to follow the Damra-Mendipathar road, NH-217 via Dainadubi, Rongjeng and up to Songsak and vice versa, stated the PWD order.

This 23 km road is one of the main state roads that directly connects East Garo Hills with North Garo Hills district without needing to pass through Assam.

The road has multiple villages, including Nanggapa and Dagal, and several thousand people from the region depend on it for travel between Mendipathar and Resubelpara in the north with Songsak, Rongjeng and Williamnagar in the east.
