Sikkim, Oct 6: At least 40 people have died in the Sikkim flash floods, which were triggered by a cloudburst resulting in a flash flood in the region. The floods have also caused extensive damage to infrastructure and displaced thousands of residents from their homes.

At least 22 bodies have been found in the Teesta River in Jalpaiguri district, according to official sources.

A massive operation was launched by the West Bengal Police along with the NDRF to search for the dead bodies and the survivors who have been washed away downstream from Sikkim to Bengal.

Also, the Sikkim government is working tirelessly to provide relief and support to the affected communities. Rescue teams have also been deployed to assist in the search and rescue efforts.

Meanwhile,  Sikkim Chief Secretary Vijay Bhushan Pathak said “Around 3,000 people are stranded in Lachen and Lachung. 3,150 people who have gone there on motorcycles are also stuck due to the floods. We will evacuate all with helicopters of Army and Air Force”.
