Guwahati, Sept 30: The governments of Meghalaya and Assam on Saturday decided to request the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate the Mukroh incident that occurred on November 22, 2022.

Five persons from Meghalaya were killed in police firing, while one forest guard from Assam also lost his life in the incident.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, as a confidence-building measure, both governments have decided to dissolve the judicial commission tasked with inquiring into the Mukroh incident.

“Both the government now will request CBI to investigate the matter instead of judicial commission. And, we will request CBI not to register that case, either in Shillong or in Guwahati, but in a neutral venue,” he said after the CM – level meeting with Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma in Guwahati on Saturday.

The Assam CM emphasized that this move aims to ensure a fair and impartial inquiry, as neither of the two states’ judicial commissions have made any progress.

“Both governments will wind up the judicial commission because none of the commissioners are going to make any progress because in the judicial inquiry ordered by Assam, Meghalaya’s witnesses are not coming. And in that judicial inquiry ordered by Meghalaya government, Assam’s witnesses are not coming,” reasoned Sarma.

Stressing on the importance of a fair and impartial inquiry, he said both governments will ask the CBI to register the case either in Kolkata, Delhi, or another State.
