Tura, July 11: Garo organisations under the banner of Joint Action Committee of Mallangkona together with student and social organisations from the region have announced that they are taking their case against the Conrad K Sangma government to the Supreme Court over the border agreement signed with Assam.

The announcement to stop the agreement from happening was made in a live online joint press conference given by four groups, namely FKJGP, AYWO, FAF and ADE on Sunday.

Pritam Marak of FKJGP said in the online conference that the JAC Mallangkona will fight against the signing of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by Assam and Meghalaya governments.

He said that it was decided to go to the courts because the Standing Committee which prepared the agreement kept the people living in the impacted border region out of any information of the proposed deal.

He charged that the Standing committee never met nor discussed with the villagers the proposal and neither did any survey of the lands with the understanding of the villages.

According to the FKJGP leader there are more than 11 villages which are not keen to go to the other side.

He said that they chose the Supreme Court instead of the high court to fight their case against the government because it was connected to two different states.

According to the leaders of these four organisations, crowd funding has been set up under the joint account of JAC Mallangkona for people to contribute so that donations can be used for the legal expenses that will be involved while fighting the case in the highest court of the land.

As per the protest organisations leaders, a draft has already been prepared and a group of Supreme Court lawyers have agreed to take the matter up.
