Guwahati, July 12: In a major research findings, the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT-G) have developed an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based model to predict the severity of knee osteoarthritis from X-ray images for a more accurate diagnosis.

According to research, Knee osteoarthritis is the most common musculoskeletal disorder in the world and has a prevalence of 28% in India.

The IIT-G team have developed a Deep Learning (DL)-based framework, namely OsteoHRNet, which they said automatically assesses the Knee Osteoarthritis (OA) severity from X-rays images.

“This AI-based model can be used to detect the severity level of the disease and accordingly assist medical practitioners remotely for a more accurate diagnosis,” researchers said.

MRI and CT scans provide a 3-D image of the knee joints for effective diagnosis of knee OA, but their availability is limited and expensive.

For routine diagnosis, X-ray imaging is very effective and more economically feasible.

The research team also includes former PhD students of Prof. Sur at IIT Guwahati, Prasen Kumar Sharma, and Sibaji Gaj (now a research fellow at Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, USA).
