Shillong, May 5: The two MLAs of People’s Democratic Front (PDF), after the General Council meeting of PDF on Friday, have announced that they will officially merge with the National People’s Party (NPP) on Saturday.
The announcement was made by PDF President and Sohra MLA, Gavin Mylliem.
The merging program will be held at the NPP office in Shillong on Saturday.
Mylliem, however, clarified that they have not dissolved the party, and a merging agreement will be signed by the two parties on Saturday.
On the query of cabinet berth, he said they have not talked about it but sources informed that the two will be appointed as advisors to two departments.
On the reason for merging with the NPP, Mylliem said that after working with the NPP led MDA-I in the previous government, the PDF feels politically inclined with the ideologies of the NPP. “Most of the agendas in the NPP are in line with the PDF’s ideology,” he said.
With the merging of the two, the strength of NPP in the 60-member Meghalaya Legislative Assembly will increase to 28 from the current strength of 26. NPP is leading the MDA-II govt with 26 of its own MLAs, 2 from BJP, 2 from HSPDP, 2 from PDF, 2 independents, and 11 UDP MLAs.
