Shillong, March 31: The Crime Investigation Department (CID) has failed to re-arrest Gabriel K Ïangrai, the suspended Police officer, after his release from District jail on Thursday afternoon.

The District and Session Court, East Khasi Hills on Thursday afternoon had granted bail to Ïangrai on all the six cases registered against him.

“There are three other cases in which the CID was trying their best to arrest him, they have infact moved applications for an arrest warrant before the District and Session Judge,” informed Iangrai’s advocate, P. Yobin while speaking to reporters on Friday.

“We were able to resist and fight our way out and finally we have moved an anticipatory bail applications in all those three cases and then the Court has granted anticipatory bail in all the three cases and the regular case. So finally, we have been able to release him from the district jail last night,” added the Advocate.

Following his release, Ïangrai complained of ailments and was later admitted in one of the hospitals in Shillong.

Advocate Yobin informed that in all six cases registered against him, none have been charged-sheeted.

The senior police officer was arrested on November 2 last year for his alleged involved in fund embezzlement in emergence response system, dry ration supply; and based on enquiry reports, Ïangrai was later arrested in four more cases including supply of covid vehicles.

“(he was released in) two cases on Wednesday and two cases on Thursday. He was earlier granted bail in another two cases,” informed Advocate Yobin.

On being asked if there’s any possibility of re-arrest, Ïangrai’s advocate informed that it is “not possible” right now for Ïangrai to be re-arrested. “Whatever sections they have to charge against him, I think they have already charged here and I don’t find any other additional charges that can be invoked here. So chances of re-arrest by the police or the CID I think it is not possible right now,” Yobin said.

“As of now we have to wait and see the chargesheet of the CID and accordingly we have to prepare our defence,” he added.

Yobin further said the CID can always challenge against his client’s bail as the law provides them with the liberty. However, Yobin informed that they are ready to defend as their client has been cooperative and has given the assurance to the court that he would continue to cooperate with the investigation.
