Shillong, March 7: The ruling NPP-led MDA-II government has nominated North Tura MLA and Former Advisor to the Chief Minister Thomas A Sangma as its consensus candidate for the post of Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

Thomas Sangma accompanied by other NPP legislators filed his papers at the office of Commissioner Secretary of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Andrews Simon in the Assembly Secretariat, Shillong on Tuesday.

The election to the Assembly speaker’s post will be held on March 9.

Taking to social media, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma wrote, “Wishing Sh. Thomas A Sangma, Speaker nominee of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly the very best.”

Speaking to reporters after filing his nomination, Sangma lauded the NPP led MDA 2.0 government in the leadership of the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma for having faith and trust in him. He also stated that the previous MDA government has given him many opportunities to work closely with his people.

Speculations are doing the round that the Opposition will not set up any candidate for the post and Sangma will be appointed as the Speaker unopposed.

The post of Speaker of the Legislative Assembly was previously held by UDP chief and Mairang MLA Metbah Lyngdoh.
