Shillong, Oct 22: A class 9 student of Air Force Public School Laitkor, Imingstar Mawlong, has set a new record as the youngest player to score in the Shillong Sports Association’s (SSA) First Division League.

This was confirmed by the SSA general secretary, Dipshon L. Nongbri.

At just 15 years old, Mawlong scored the winning goal for Nongkseh Sports Social and Cultural Club in their second victory against Mylliem Sports Club on Monday. His decisive second goal helped Nongkseh secure a 2-1 win, earning all three points.

Having one’s name etched as a goal scorer in the First Division is a remarkable feat as the league becomes tougher and more competitive each season. To set a record as the youngest scorer at 15 years is extraordinary, as the previous record was held by players aged 19 or 20.

Mawlong’s incredible talent was first noticed by the president of Nongkseh SS&CC during the final of the Meghalaya Youth League. Nongkseh SS&CC president, Daniel M Thangkhiew, said, “The moment he (Imingstar) touched the ball, I knew we had to sign him.”

To sign the 15-year-old star was no easy task for Nongkseh SS&CC. Club General Secretary, Marbiang Thangkhiew, had to obtain permission not only from Mawlong’s parents but also from his school to allow him to attend training and participate in matches. Balancing his homework with training, Imingstar has proven to be as disciplined a student as he is a player.

Before joining Nongkseh SS&CC, Mawlong played in the SSA Fourth Division for Madan Laban SC, contributing to the club’s promotion to the Third Division.

At such a young age, if the Nongkseh ‘Starboy’ maintains his exceptional form, the sky’s the limit for him.

Football in Meghalaya, especially in the capital Shillong, has seen significant growth in recent years. The level of competition has risen dramatically, with teams taking local leagues more seriously, and players now playing professionally, not just as a hobby.
