Shillong, Oct 22: The Meghalaya Cricket Association (MCA) has cleared the names of eight players to represent the State following the submission of the report by an inquiry committee that was setup to probe eligibility of certain players to represent the State in BCCI domestic tournaments.
The inquiry was initiated earlier this month following protests over the eligibility of players on the Senior Men’s and U-23 Men’s teams. In response, the MCA set up a three-member committee comprising Vice-President Rayonald Kharkamni and two apex council members, Arwotki Sumer and Sengnab Momin, to investigate the matter.
The committee reviewed key documents such as birth certificates, Aadhaar cards, and voter identification, approving eight players: Jaskirat Singh Sachdeva and Arpit Bhatewara (Senior Men’s team), and Rohit Kumar Yadav, Raghav Kumar Magotra, PM Santosh, Kevin Sanjeev Christopher, Abhishek Kumar, and Sachin Kumar (all U-23 Men’s team).
According to the committee’s report, these players are eligible under BCCI guidelines to participate at the district level, and based on performance, they can be selected to represent Meghalaya in BCCI tournaments.
The report emphasised that the players met all criteria set by the BCCI, which allows representation based on birth, education, work, residency, or being the child of a central government employee posted within the state’s jurisdiction.
However, two players—Sachin Kumar and Rohit Kumar Yadav—were given provisional clearance, pending submission of their original school and residential certificates for final approval.
Meanwhile, the committee also decided that Banialam Mylliemngap, who was left out of the U-23 Men’s team due to injury, be considered for selection once he recovers and receives fitness clearance from the team’s physiotherapist.
Additionally, the committee advised that district associations should thoroughly verify players’ documents before submitting them to the MCA, in line with BCCI regulations.
As a final recommendation, the committee suggested that one selector from the Senior Men’s Selection Committee should attend both home and away matches during the remainder of the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season to assess players’ performances.
