Shillong, Nov 23: Seng Kut Snem, an annual festival is celebrated by the Khasi community in Meghalaya, marking the preservation and display of their rich culture and traditions. The Khasi people, the largest ethnic group in Meghalaya, are unique as one of the few remaining matrilineal societies globally.

Seng Kut Snem is observed on the day preceding the Khasi New Year, with this year’s celebration scheduled for November 23. It serves as a significant occasion for the community to showcase and honour their cultural heritage.

Taking to X, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma wrote, “‘Seng Kut Snem’ celebrates the Seng Khasi Movement and the efforts of the Seng Khasi to preserve, protect & uphold indigenous Khasi faith & culture. On its 124th foundation day, I extend my best wishes to the citizens of Meghalaya.”

Seng Kut Snem is held in Shillong. On this day people of the people of the Khasi community come together and celebrate this day by singing, dancing, playing music and having a good quality time.

Once a religious observance, Seng Kut Snem has undergone a transformation, becoming a lavish and widely celebrated event in Meghalaya. The people residing around Shillong eagerly look forward to the festival, and its popularity has soared over time. Seng Kut Snem has evolved into a major attraction, drawing in a substantial number of tourists to Shillong who seek to participate in and experience the exuberant festivities.

‘Laid Pyni Riti,’ a vibrant and colorful procession, is a highlight of Seng Kut Snem. This procession serves as a visual spectacle, showcasing the beauty of Khasi life, culture, and traditions. The procession culminates at the Weiking Ground in Jaiaw.

Following the procession, Seng Khasi priests conduct prayers, setting a spiritual tone for the festivities. Subsequently, the atmosphere transforms into one of joy, with people engaging in traditional games, folk dances, and various other celebratory activities. This post-procession period provides an opportunity for the community to come together, celebrate their heritage, and enjoy the richness of Khasi traditions.
