Tura, March 14: The West Garo Hills district administration has ordered the immediate closure of all unauthorized brick kilns operating in the district, citing serious environmental and public health concerns.
District Magistrate Vibhor Aggarwal issued the prohibitory order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, directing that all brick kilns functioning without mandatory environmental clearance must stop operations with immediate effect.
The order follows directives from the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which has mandated strict action against brick kilns operating without environmental approvals.
According to the district administration, several brick kilns in West Garo Hills were found to be operating without the required environmental clearance, raising concerns about their impact on air quality, worker safety, and the health of nearby communities.
Officials said the operation of such kilns contributes significantly to air pollution and environmental degradation, while also exposing workers and local residents to harmful emissions.
“In view of the potential environmental and health hazards, the District Magistrate has issued a prohibitory order directing the closure of all unauthorized brick kilns across the district,” the administration stated.
