SHILLONG, SEPT 28: NPP state president and Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has accused the opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) of winning elections by misleading people through false propaganda on social media and questioned what development it has brought despite being in power in the KHADC.
Campaigning for NPP’s Shillong Lok Sabha bypoll candidate Dr DRL Nonglait at Wahlyngkhat village under Pynursla Block, Tynsong said the NPP has now understood why it lost elections in 2024 (Lok Sabha polls) and 2025 (ADC elections).
“I just want to remind you about 2024-2025, perhaps I understand here that perhaps those two elections that we lost, perhaps they were elections that were run on social media. To what extent social media works to mislead the public just because they write different types of things and people believe it,” Tynsong said.
“So I am telling you in these one-two days I have come to understand that perhaps this social media has misled the people of Meghalaya state and especially us, the people of the Hynniewtrep land. They win elections perhaps just by circulation which is false, which is deceitful, which has no basis anywhere,” he alleged.
Directly targeting the VPP, which is ruling the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Tynsong asked the party to answer to the public.
“I want that such people should give an answer in front of us, the public. The public has given you the mandate to govern in the district council. What is the change? Please give an answer. What is the change?” he said.
“I don’t want to explain more about this, you know better,” he added.
The NPP president also launched a scathing attack on the VPP over its attempt to amend the Land Act, which was recently returned by the Governor.
“I tell you there is one bill especially regarding the Land Act… perhaps the Governor said it has to be returned because that law says it will no longer recognize the Rangbah Shnong, the Dorbar Shnong, the Dorbar Raid, Dorbar Hima, as if they are no longer needed, everything has to be done there in the district council,” Tynsong said.
Asserting that he has studied the bill in detail, he said, “Especially I have read up to the comma, the full-stop, I know it very well, it is not that I am just talking on social media. I have read every single line of what they have done in that amendment to change which affects the tradition and custom and especially the powers of the Dorbar Shnong.”
“You the public should judge,” Tynsong told the gathering.
