Shillong, May 12: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has demanded that the government of Meghalaya put job interviews on hold within 48 hours and revamp the reservation policy. Failure to do so will result in the party agitating against the government, it warned.

Addressing a gathering at the Additional Secretariat, VPP President and Nongkrem legislator Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit called upon the people of the state to support their cause. Basaiawmoit also stressed that the issue was with the reservation policy and not with the roster system.

The VPP gathered at the Additional Secretariat on Friday afternoon to submit a memorandum to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma regarding the roster system and the reservation policy. However, since the CM is out of station, the letter was submitted to Deputy Chief Minister In-charge Urban Affairs Sniawbhalang Dhar.

VPP MLA from Mawlai, Brightstarwell Marbaniang stated that it was one of the election pledges of the party and a long pending issue for the last 50 years.

VPP North Shillong MLA, Adelbert Nongrum, praising the VPP president’s leadership, said the reservation policy is outdated and claimed that it hasn’t been passed by a cabinet and neither received the Governor’s assent.

The VPP has called for the reservation policy to be revamped, claiming that recruitment is taking place regularly despite the call to revamp reservation policy.

In the letter addressed to Chief Minister, that was submitted to Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on Friday, VPP General Secretary Dr Ricky A J Syngkon said: “…on behalf of the party, I request you to kindly take all necessary action to put a stop to all recruitment process that is currently going on in several government departments/ organizations/ institutions until the vexed and pertinent issue on Roster System and Job Reservation Policy is deliberated threadbare and resolve. In the best interest of all the stakeholders, especially the youth of the state, we solicit a notification to this effect be issued within 48 hours.”
